Flexible sound walls

1. General

Buitink Technology develops, produces and installs flexible sound absorbing walls. These walls are developed and composed custom made. However we also offer a number of standard type flexible sound walls. Various types can be combined.

Sound insulation tests have been performed on these walls according to EN ISO 10140-2 (Measurement of airborne sound insulation).

2. Tests on sound insulation

In the video above is shown a sound insulation test in practice. To obtain relevant and reliable test results panels of 5x4 meter were tested.

All materials of construction we apply for sound absorbing walls are flame retardant according to class B-s2, d0 of EN 13501-1.

3. Standard Buitink sound walls

Following sound walls are standard in the portfolio of Buitink Technology:

3.1 BTFW-12

This flexible acoustic wall is composed of fibred reinforced canvas(closed coated fabric), an absorbing/insulating foil, acoustic wool of 50 mm thickness and an acoustic mesh fabric.

The Rated Sound Reduction Index of this composition: Rw=28.
Weight: about 12 kg/ m2
Thickness panel: about 55 mm

3.2 BTFW-7

This flexible acoustic wall is composed of fibred reinforced canvas(closed coated fabric), an absorbing/insulating foil, acoustic wool of 50 mm thickness and an acoustic mesh fabric.

Weight: circa 7 kg/ m2
Thickness panel: circa 55 mm

3.3 BTFW-18

This flexible acoustic wall is composed of fibred reinforced canvas(closed coated fabric), an absorbing/insulating foil, acoustic wool of 50 mm thickness, an absorbing/insulating foil, acoustic wool of thickness 50 mm and  fibred reinforced canvas(closed coated fabric).

3.4 Silent AW

The Alphalia Silent Aw of Serge Ferrarin is a coated fabric with a high degree of sound absorption. The material itself hasn't a high degree of sound insulation, but combines perfectly with the flexible types of sound walls of Buitink Technology. See 3.1 for the tests performed with Silent AW combined with an air gap of 20 mm and panel type BTFW-7.

4. Combining walls

Often increased sound insulation is obtained when a air gap is realized in between 2 sound insulating walls. Buitink Technology tested combined walls according to EN ISO 10140-2 (Measurement of airborne sound insulation).

4.1 BTFW-7/ gap 200 mm/ Silent AW

This configuration is composed of Buitink flexible sound wall BTFW-7, an air gap of 200 mm and subsequently a layer composed of Silent AW van Serge Ferrari.

4.2 BTFW-7/ air gap 200 mm/ BTFW-12

This configuration is composed of Buitink flexible sound wall BTFW-7, an air gap of 200 mm and subsequently a layer of BTFW-12.

5. Overview sound insulation values

 6. Example project

For a project in the south of France Buitink Technology was requested to develop a solution for insulating sound created by  events and parties on a unique location.

Said location was an ancient marine basis for submarines. In future this site was intended to be used for cultural events and parties. Sound produced during these activities has to be almost eliminated almost completely

Below pictures show the location and the sound walls to be applied.

6.1 Solution: a combination of 2 flexible acoustic walls for each entrance

To meet the requirements ofn the customer Buitink Technology developed huge sound walls for the historical building. A combination of type BTFW-12 (inner wand) and batyline AW (outer wall) was chosen.

6.2 Size and fixations

Each of the four large sound walls have a size of about 22 x 18 m.

Side wall and roof of the individual flexible acoustic sound walls are connected to the existing structure by means of springs. Th downside of the walls are agravated and fixed with chains.
