About the ETFE air cushion roof
Buitink Technology realised the transparent air cushion roof above the Klimatenkas in the Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam. The roof consists of 117 ETFE cushions with a total surface area of about 1,500 m². Almost all the cushions have a unique shape (triangles, rectangles, bevelled rectangles) and are part of a three-dimensional curved and convex roof surface.
U-value (horizontal roof) | 2.29 W/m²K |
g-value | 0,78 |
LTA value | 0,75 |
Direct solar transmission | 0,76 |
Sustainability & Innovation
Both the ETFE foil and its application as an air cushion roof are a sustainable choice. Thanks to high insulation values and light transmission, the roof helps save energy. Moreover, it contributes to a gas-free future for the Hortus. Via a 600-metre-long connection, the H'ART Museum supplies residual heat to the greenhouse, making the Klimatenkas the first gas-free public greenhouse in the Netherlands.

Technology behind the project
Besides the ETFE cushions, Buitink Technology also took care of the air installation and stainless steel piping. All this ensures an optimally functioning air cushion roof and perfect insulation performance.
ETFE skylights
Automated windows, also made of ETFE air cushions, are integrated into the air cushion roof. These windows can be opened and closed for natural ventilation and climate control without compromising the light transmission and insulating properties of the roof.
