ETFE ceiling panels Amsterdam Zuid station – Zuidasdok

The new platform canopies of Amsterdam Zuid station feature translucent ceiling panels by Buitink Technology. The panels are located below the glass skylights at the stair towers and let daylight through to the platform evenly and without glare. Commissioned by Buiting Staalbouw, we developed, prefabricated and installed the panels.

Double-layer ETFE in an aluminium frame

Each panel consists of a slim aluminium frame with two layers of ETFE foil: transparent on top, milky white underneath. The white bottom layer diffuses the light, so the ceiling glows softly during the day and the structure above stays out of sight. A narrow, clean joint between the panels follows the lines of the ceiling.

The panels are fully pre-assembled and inspected in our workshop. On site they only need to be lifted into place with an aerial platform and aligned: fast, clean and with minimal disruption to the station.

Why ETFE ceiling panels

  • Translucent: daylight from the skylights is put to use;
  • Lightweight: a fraction of glass or sheet material, so the suspension stays simple;
  • Shatterproof and safe: no glass above passengers;
  • Durable: UV-resistant, does not yellow;
  • Removable: panels can be taken down for maintenance of installations above.

Light ceilings made of ETFE

A translucent ETFE ceiling combines daylight with a calm, even ceiling surface. The principle suits stations, atria, passages, schools and offices: anywhere a ceiling must let light through while the services above stay out of sight. FAQs

What is an ETFE ceiling panel?

A lightweight aluminium frame holding ETFE foil: transparent on top and milky white underneath. The panel lets daylight through, diffuses it and keeps the structure and services above out of sight.

Can the ceiling panels be removed?

Yes. The panels hang in the supporting structure and can be taken down individually for maintenance of lighting or services above the ceiling, then put back in place.

Are ETFE ceiling panels suitable for other buildings?

Yes. We tailor dimensions, colour and light transmission to each project, for example stations, atria, passages, schools, swimming pools and offices. Contact us to discuss the options.
