ETFE cushion roof maintenance and repair

We carry out inspection, maintenance and renovation work on ETFE cushion roofs in the Netherlands and abroad: roofs we built ourselves and roofs built by other contractors. Cleaning an ETFE roof is rarely necessary, because the foil is naturally dirt-repellent. When it is needed, we take care of that too.

What we do

  • Inspection of cushions, welds, edge profiles, clamping strips and drainage.
  • Repair of leaking cushions and tears in the foil, on the roof.
  • Replacement of complete cushions, made in our own workshop.
  • Cleaning the foil on the outside and the inside.
  • Replacing or renewing blowers, dryers, pipework, hoses and controls.
  • Renovation of roofs with recurring problems: we adapt the details so the problem does not come back.

The roof and the air supply unit belong together

An ETFE cushion roof is kept under pressure by an air supply unit: preferably two blowers that take over from each other in case of a fault, an air dryer and a control system. Many problems with ETFE roofs do not start in the foil but in the installation: a failed blower, a saturated dryer, aged hoses or a control system in fault. That is why we always check both, and we work to NEN 3140 for the electrical installation.

Lessons from practice

Maintaining ETFE roofs built by others, we keep seeing the same issues: cushions with too little rise, so the foil is overstressed and starts to creep; cushions whose shape comes from stretching rather than from the cutting pattern; pipework of non-industrial quality; and hoses that age or become brittle. In a renovation we resolve these issues. New cushions are checked against CEN/TS 19102, and replacement foil gets the same or a better fire classification to EN 13501-1.

Frequently asked questions

My ETFE roof is leaking, what now?
Send us photos and the number of cushions. The cause is often a cushion losing pressure or a problem in the air supply unit. We inspect and repair the cushion on site, or make a new one.

Can you maintain a roof you did not build?
Yes. A large part of our maintenance work is on ETFE roofs built by other contractors.

How often should an ETFE roof be inspected?
We recommend an annual inspection of the roof and the air supply unit.
