Tensed membrane for The Growing Pavilion

An ode to bio-based building on Dutch Design Week 2019 (DDW 2019). Buitink Technology made and installed a tensed membrane, made of cotton fabric, for the pavilion.

During the Dutch Design Week 2019 from 19 till 27 October 2019 the iconic bio-based building "The Growing Pavilion" is erected in the center of the Ketelhuisplein area in the city of Eindhoven. With this project Company New Heroes en Dutch Design Foundation together with their partners like Fiction Factory, Primum, Krown.bio and Buitink Technology is promoting circular building.

Bio-based and "circular" construction

"With The Growing Pavilion we show the potential and the huge beauty of biobased and circular building", designer Pascal Leboucq of Company New Heroes explains. Each material like mycelium walls and bulrush floor slabs explicitly shows the natural raw material. In this way the pavilion exhibits a unique experience of organic texture and color."We promote this beauty as power. New esthetics provided by the wonderfull own identity of biobased materials", according to the designer.

The pavilion shows the near future of bio-based building. "Our position is vulnerable", Lucas de Man explains. "Our ideal pavilion consists of many new bio-based materials. But large scale applications require more than only good materials: scale up of production capacity, proper regulations, innovative designers and aware consumers". The Growing Pavilion addresses these issues because these are essential to realize the required change to a bio-based and circular economy.
